Chumur Monastery Project

SUPPORTING CHUMUR MONASTERY
Because of its poor foundation and the use of inadequate materials during its original construction, the old monastery is unstable and in disrepair. The monastery brought in architects and engineers in 2005 to design plans and begin grading and leveling the site, as well as initiate laying a new foundation with high-quality building materials.

Construction has also begun on several new buildings and a retaining wall. Ideally construction will be completed in early 2008.

Costs for rebuilding Chumur Monastery are high due to the transportation challenges, the ever-rising price of building materials, the need for high-quality materials due to the region’s severe climate and proneness to earthquakes, and the difficulty of attracting workers to such a harsh, cold region.

Estimated costs, including labor:

Prayer hall; $29,000
Lama’s quarters/guest quarters 51,000
Monks’ quarters 75,000
Monks’ quarters (2) 55,000
Restrooms 4,100
Retaining wall 33,000
Land development 11,628
Plumbing 36,900
TOTAL $295,628

Funds are urgently needed to pay for the construction. Your support of any amount is greatly appreciated.
