SUPPORTING CHUMUR MONASTERY
Because of its poor foundation and the use of inadequate materials during its original construction, the old monastery is unstable and in disrepair. The monastery brought in architects and engineers in 2005 to design plans and begin grading and leveling the site, as well as initiate laying a new foundation with high-quality building materials.
Construction on the retaining wall began in 2007 and is still under construction. Construction has already begun on several new buildings, including the prayer hall, the Lamas' and monks' residential quarters, and the kitchen area. The 2009 summer construction season will begin in late May and funds are urgently needed to keep the construction going.
Costs for rebuilding Chumur Monastery are high due to the transportation challenges, the ever-rising price of building materials, the need for high-quality materials due to the region’s severe climate and proneness to earthquakes, and the difficulty of attracting workers to such a harsh, cold region.
Estimated costs, including labor:
| Retaining Wall | $50,000 |
| Two Classrooms | $20,000 |
| Solar Lighting | $10,000 |
| Monastery Supply Vehicle | $12,500 |
| Additional Student Quarters | $20,000 |
| TOTAL ESTIMATED COSTS | $112,500 |
Funds are urgently needed to pay for the construction. Your support of any amount is greatly appreciated.
